Description

Euphorbia meloformis is a compact succulent with a captivating spherical form. Native to South Africa, this thornless euphorbia develops rounded stems with prominent, rounded midribs. Ranging from light green to dark green, its epidermis is sometimes streaked with purple bands, depending on light intensity. During the flowering period, it produces small greenish-yellow cyathium, adding a subtle yet charming appeal to its appearance. With its slow growth and adaptability to indoor conditions, it will delight succulent collectors and lovers of architectural plants.

Native to the arid and semi-arid regions of the Eastern Cape province in South Africa, Euphorbia meloformis (also called Euphorbia pomiformis, Euphorbia meloniformis) typically grows solitary or in small clusters on well-drained soils. It is characterised by its globular stem, which measures between 6 and 10 cm in height with a similar diameter in cultivation. Its midribs, usually numbering 8 to 12, are well-defined and may feature subtle tubercles along their aristas. Unlike other euphorbias, it lacks thorns, making handling easier. The cyathium appear at the tips of mature stems, borne on short peduncles, giving this summer flowering a whimsical look. This monoecious species develops distinct male and female flowers on the same plant. After pollination in its natural habitat, it produces small ovoid fruits containing seeds dispersed naturally by bursting. Its adaptation to arid environments allows it to store water in its fleshy stem, reducing watering needs. Its thick, waxy foliage also minimises water loss, a crucial advantage in its native habitat.

To cultivate Euphorbia meloformis indoors, place it in a spot with bright light and direct sunlight. A well-draining substrate, such as a cactus mix, is essential to prevent root rot. Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings, and reduce watering in autumn and winter. This species prefers temperatures between 18°C and 24°C and is not frost-hardy. Handle it with gloves, as its white sap is toxic and may cause skin irritation.

Euphorbia meloformis pairs beautifully with compact succulents, such as Haworthia and Lithops. Its pronounced midribs will contrast with the softer forms of these companions. Combine it with globular cacti like Gymnocalycium saglionis or Astrophytum, which share similar care requirements. Its minimalist style is also highlighted in a rocky setting, surrounded by light gravel, volcanic stones, or decorative sand, reminiscent of its natural habitat.

Maintenance and care

Arrosez modérément en laissant le substrat sécher entre deux arrosages. En hiver, réduisez l'arrosage à une fois par mois. En été, ne laissez pas le substrat sécher complétement.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Disease and pest advice

En cas d'infestation de cochenilles, nettoyez délicatement les zones touchées avec un coton-tige imbibé d'alcool à 70 %. Assurez-vous également que le substrat est bien drainant pour éviter l'excès d'humidité.
