More information

Carnivorous plant of quite a tall stature with beautifully marked leaves featuring purple-red veins and a yellow tint on the upper side. Suitable for outdoor cultivation, it is a hardy plant that thrives in moist, acidic, well-drained, and poor soil. It enjoys sunlight but is wary of the most scorching rays, which can lead to drought. Its large, architectural leaves are trumpet-shaped. Its famous urns serve as traps for flying insects. It flourishes in light soil with organic matter and sand, and should only be watered with rainwater. Under these conditions, it can remain in the garden all year round, by the edge of a pond, in damp ground, or in a pot. It can also be grown indoors, but as it is hardy down to at least -15°C, even -18°C, it benefits from a period of dormancy outdoors due to the winter cold.

Description

Sarracenia flava var. ornata Super Ornata is a fairly tall carnivorous plant with beautifully marked leaves featuring purple-red veins and tinted yellow on the upper part. It can be grown outdoors and is a hardy plant that thrives in wet, acidic, well-drained, and poor soil. It enjoys sunlight, but avoid the most scorching rays, which can lead to dryness. Its large, architectural leaves are trumpet-shaped. Its famous urns act as traps for flying insects. It flourishes in light soil mixed with organic matter and sand, watered solely with rainwater. Under these conditions, it can spend the entire year in the garden, by the edge of a pond, in wet ground, or in a pot. It can also be grown indoors, but as it is hardy down to at least -15°C, and even -18°C, it benefits from a period of dormancy outdoors due to the winter cold.

Sarracenia belongs to the Sarraceniaceae family. It is a persistent perennial native to the swampy areas of the eastern United States. Its trumpet-shaped leaves vary in colour and are adorned with veins in some species. Their shape and height also change according to species or cultivars. The plant produces urns in which insects are captured. They are attracted by the colour, shape, and nectar secreted by the plant at the entrance of the trap. Sarracenia flava var. ornata Super Ornata reaches 30 to 40 cm in height, or even more in open ground, and spreads gently. Its erect, decorative leaves are tinted yellow on the upper part with clearly marked purple-red veins. The plant may eventually flower after a few years under good conditions, on thick stems topped with large round buds that open into flowers resembling those of daffodils.

Sarracenia flava ornata Super Ornata is an excellent plant for wet to swampy areas, easily settling along water bodies, sheltered from the wind, while taking into account its cultivation conditions: acidic, well-drained, and poor soil and in sunlight. It also enjoys being in a pot on the terrace, provided it has suitable substrate that is constantly moist and is only watered with rainwater. You can plant several varieties of different sizes and appearances.

Planting and care

The Sarracenia ideally grows in ericaceous soil, meaning in acidic, drained, and poor soil that is constantly moist. Plant it in spring or autumn, in sunlight, avoiding the hottest hours in summer, as it is sensitive to drought. Ensure it is also sheltered from the winds. You can also cultivate it in a plastic pot by providing a substrate that meets these conditions (for example, a mix of peat and river sand) and watering it only with rainwater. Do not add fertiliser. It can remain outside all year round.
