Philodendron x joepii

The Philodendron joepii is a rare, sought-after tropical climbing plant by collectors for its highly unusual foliage. This sculptural liana makes a striking statement in urban jungle or contemporary interiors. To fully appreciate its form, provide it with a support such as a moss pole along with light, warmth, and humid ambient air.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Philodendron x joepii has an uncertain botanical status and is rarely found in the wild. According to the botanical explorer Joep Moonen, it may be a natural hybrid between Philodendron bipennifolium and P. pedatum, two species present at his discovery site in French Guiana. This presumed origin would explain its unique appearance and extreme rarity. A climbing plant, the Philodendron joepii develops long woody stems supported by aerial roots that cling to a support. The growth of this plant is relatively slow, reaching a height of 1.5 to 3 m depending on growing conditions. Its spectacular leaves which can grow up to 90 cm long display an unusual trilobed shape, with flared upper lobes and a tapered, arrow-like tip. Their texture is smooth and glossy, with a deep green hue accentuated by prominent veins.

Warning - Like many philodendrons, this plant is toxic if ingested.
