Description

Ctenanthe oppenheimiana is nicknamed the "peacock plant" due to the patterns on its leaves and their ability to unfold in the morning and close in the evening. its eye-catching, elongated leaves striped with green on a silvery background create a tropical and elegant atmosphere. Perfect for modern, bohemian, or exotic decors, it finds a place in a bright living room or a humid bathroom. With a little attention and proper care, it will reward you with spectacular foliage.

Ctenanthe oppenheimiana (formerly called Calathea oppenheimiana), from the Marantaceae family, is a rhizomatous perennial with an upright and dense habit. Its growth is considered fast, typically reaching 50 cm in height indoors, or even up to 1 m under optimal conditions. Its evergreen, long-petiolate leaves can grow up to 40 cm long. They feature a silvery upper surface, adorned with dark green bands that meet at the margins. The purple underside creates a stunning combination of hues. Flowering is rare indoors and consists of small, non-decorative white flowers. Its spectacular leaves fold up in the evening in a movement called nyctinasty.
Native to Brazil, Ctenanthe oppenheimiana thrives naturally in humid tropical forests. When grown indoors, it should be placed in a bright spot without direct sunlight. It is essential to avoid sudden temperature changes and to never expose it to temperatures below 15°C. Additionally, this plant appreciates high relative humidity, above 60%, which can be encouraged by regular misting or the use of a humidifier. Watering should be regular, keeping the substrate slightly moist while avoiding excess water to prevent root rot. This plant requires attention but can be cultivated with a bit of experience.

Ctenanthe oppenheimiana creates an elegant tropical atmosphere in a living room or bathroom, as long as the right conditions are met. Its beautiful leaves pair well with white ceramic pots or wicker planters for a bohemian-chic style. Place it on a designer shelf or near a living wall for an urban jungle effect. Pair it with a Calathea orbifolia, with equally spectacular foliage, or a Maranta leuconeura, which shares its need for soft light and humidity. Ideal for modern or exotic interiors, it adds a lively and refined touch to your space.

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Pruning is not necessary, except to remove damaged or dry leaves. This also stimulates new growth.

Disease and pest advice
