More information

A famous houseplant known for its long green leaves adorned with white stripes, reminiscent of brushstrokes. This tropical beauty thrives in soft light without direct sunlight, a very humid atmosphere, and light soil that remains slightly moist. It enjoys warmth but dislikes draughts. It will reward regular care with a daily spectacle: its leaves unfold during the day and fold back at night, in a rather fascinating botanical choreography.

Description

The Calathea vittata, sometimes nicknamed the 'Peacock Plant' or 'Prayer Plant', is a true botanical gem with its stunning white and deep green striped leaves that spread and fold following a circadian rhythm. Perfect for adding an exotic and refined touch to your interior, it brings a lot of character to contemporary, bohemian, or tropical decors. Place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight to preserve the brilliance of its foliage. Increase ambient humidity with a spray bottle or humidifier to provide conditions close to its tropical habitat.

The Calathea vittata, from the Marantaceae botanical family, is a tropical perennial with an upright and slightly bushy habit. At maturity, it typically reaches a height of 40 to 60 cm and a spread of 30 to 50 cm. Its growth is considered normal to fast under optimal humidity and warmth conditions. The elliptical and elongated leaves measure between 20 and 30 cm in length. They have a smooth texture and are characterised by broad white stripes strikingly contrasted against a vivid green background. Although flowering indoors is rare, when it occurs, the plant produces small white or purple flowers, often deemed insignificant compared to its ornamental foliage.

Native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly Venezuela, the Calathea vittata thrives in humid and shaded environments. In its natural habitat, it grows under a dense canopy, benefiting from filtered light, warmth, and constant humidity. To replicate these conditions indoors, it is recommended to place it in a spot offering moderate to low indirect light, ensure high ambient humidity, and maintain a stable temperature between 18 and 25 °C. Regular watering is essential, ensuring the substrate remains slightly moist without being waterlogged. It is also advisable to avoid draughts and sudden temperature changes.

An interesting feature of this plant lies in its nyctinastic behaviour: its leaves fold at night and unfold during the day, a phenomenon that earns it the nickname 'Prayer Plant'. Although the Calathea vittata is not toxic to pets and humans, it is prudent to handle the sap with care as it may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

The Calathea vittata will find its place in a bright living room but not behind a window, a bright bathroom, or a heated conservatory. For a trendy look, place it in a matte white ceramic planter or natural rattan for a chic bohemian style. On a shelf or low furniture, this plant will catch the eye with its elegance and graphic appeal. This Calathea will stand out in minimalist, Scandinavian, or tropical decors.

Location

Maintenance and care

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

No specific pruning is required, but remove damaged or yellowed leaves to promote healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice
