Description

Calathea warscewiczii, sometimes nicknamed Velvet Calathea, is a houseplant which is admired for its truly luxurious velvety foliage. Its large leaves, displaying dark and light green patterns, stand gracefully to reveal a purple underside. Invite this high-class exotic plant into a tropical or contemporary decor, for example in your living room or office. To enjoy it for a long time, place it in a bright spot, but not in direct sunlight, and maintain high ambient humidity.

A member of the Marantaceae family, Calathea warscewiczii has the botanical synonyms Maranta warscewiczii, Goeppertia warszewiczii, and Phrynium warscewiczii. Native to the tropical forests of Central America, particularly Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Calathea warscewiczii thrives in warm, humid environments, sheltered from direct sunlight. It is a perennial with an upright habit, reaching a height of 50 to 80 cm and a similar spread, depending on growing conditions. Its leaves, about 30 cm long, feature a unique velvety texture, with dark green chevron patterns on top and a purple hue underneath. Although indoor flowering is rare, it may produce conical cream-coloured inflorescences that turn purplish-pink. Its leaves fold slightly at night and reopen in the morning, a phenomenon called nyctinasty.

Calathea warscewiczii is non-toxic to pets and humans. Moreover, it helps improve indoor air quality by filtering certain pollutants.

To encourage its growth, maintain relatively high humidity and water it regularly with room-temperature water, avoiding hard water. A well-draining, organically rich soil is ideal. Avoid draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations, as it prefers a stable temperature between 18 and 29°C.

Calathea warscewiczii fits perfectly in a warm and elegant interior. Place it in a bright living room away from direct sunlight, a zen bedroom, or a tropical conservatory. Highlight it in a matte ceramic or natural wicker planter to enhance its exotic appeal. On a plant shelf or a stylish stand, it draws all eyes with its spectacular patterns. Pair it with a Calathea orbifolia for an XXL foliage effect or a Maranta leuconeura for a sculptural and elegant duo, perfect for a boho-chic or Victorian-style interior.

Location

The calathea can find its place in any moderately lit room of the house, away from direct sunlight. However, avoid placing it in a draught or a room that is too dry, as this could damage its leaves. A tropical conservatory with a warm and humid atmosphere would also meet all its needs.

Maintenance and care

Water by soaking once a week, preferably with non-calcareous water at room temperature. Mist regularly 2 to 3 times a week. In winter, reduce watering but maintain misting.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring, every 1 to 2 years, or as soon as the roots fill the pot.
Use a light and well-draining compost, enriched with organic matter. Add clay pebbles or perlite to prevent water stagnation.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10 type), to be applied once a month during the growth period (spring and summer). Reduce in autumn and stop in winter.

Houseplant care

The Calathea warscewiczii requires regular maintenance to keep its neat appearance. Remove faded leaves and dust the leaves with a soft, damp cloth to maintain their shine.
Pruning is limited to removing damaged leaves. Cut off yellowed or dry leaves at the base.

Disease and pest advice

If red spider mites appear (yellowing leaves and fine webs), mist regularly and increase humidity. For scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water or apply neem oil.
