More information

A variety with an incredible deep pink colour. Its very round leaves are surrounded by a dark purple, almost black ring. Each evening, this Calathea folds its leaves to unfold them again in the morning. It prefers a location without direct sunlight and requires high ambient humidity to thrive. This plant is sensitive to water quality: hard water and mineral build-up can dull its foliage by causing brown edges.

Description

Calathea 'Misty Red', commonly known as the peacock plant, is a stunning variety. Its entirely round leaves are of an intense pink. They are edged with a very dark, almost black-purple margin. The thick and glossy leaf is slightly embossed. Originating from the tropics, this Calathea will bring exoticism and colour to your interior, as long as it benefits from filtered light and good ambient humidity.

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, Calathea 'Misty Red' is derived from the species Calathea roseopicta (synonym Goeppertia roseopicta), native to the humid forests of the Amazon, where it thrives under the dense canopy. The 'Misty Red' variety is a cultivar selected for its striking and intense foliage. It reaches 40 to 50 cm in all directions at maturity. Its round leaves, edged with a purple margin, are of a very vivid purplish-pink. This unique colouration makes it a centrepiece in interior decoration. Like other Calatheas, its leaves fold up at night, a phenomenon known as nyctinasty. The plant prefers indirect and filtered light, as direct sunlight could burn its delicate leaves. It should be kept away from south-facing windows and thrives in north-facing exposures. A high humidity, accompanied by temperatures between 18 and 25°C, ensures proper development of the plant.

Calathea 'Misty Red' is the star of the show in your interior if you are a fan of its incredible colours. Placed on a piece of furniture or a pedestal, in a black planter that echoes its border and further intensifies its vivid pink, it is unmatched for adding sophistication and exoticism to rooms such as the living room, bedroom, or office, as long as the necessary conditions are met. To create a harmonious atmosphere, pair it with plants with similar needs, such as philodendrons or other plants from the Marantaceae family with more subdued colours.
