Description

The Calathea 'Peacock', nicknamed the peacock plant, captivates with its magnificent foliage whose patterns resemble the feathers of a peacock. Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, this houseplant embodies exoticism and elegance. In interior decoration, it makes a striking statement in contemporary or bohemian settings. To preserve its beauty, place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight and maintain high ambient humidity around it. Regular watering with non-calcareous water is essential for its well-being.

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, the Calathea makoyana 'Peacock' or Goeppertia makoyana Peacock, is a rhizomatous perennial plant. Its habit is upright and bushy, with ovate leaves borne on long, stiff petioles that unfold gracefully like feathers. With relatively slow growth, the plant typically reaches 45 cm in height with a spread of 30 to 40 cm. Its ovate leaves, about 15 cm long, feature a light green upper surface adorned with dark green veins, while the underside displays a purple hue creating a striking contrast. Although it may produce small white flowers in summer, its flowering indoors is rare and subtle. The nickname 'peacock plant' comes from the resemblance of its foliar patterns to the feathers of this majestic bird.

In its natural habitat, the Calathea makoyana thrives under the canopy of Brazilian tropical forests where humidity is high and light is filtered. To recreate these conditions indoors, it is recommended to maintain an ambient humidity of at least 60%, avoid draughts, and opt for a rich, slightly acidic, and well-draining substrate. This plant requires special attention to retain its vibrancy, particularly by avoiding exposure to direct sunlight, which could damage its delicate foliage.

The Calathea 'Peacock' is perfect for creating an exotic yet elegant atmosphere in your home. Place it in a bright living room but without direct sunlight, a bedroom, or even a humid bathroom where its refined foliage will shine. For a trendy decorative effect, display it in a textured ceramic planter or on a natural wood shelf, highlighting its sophisticated allure. To enhance this jungle-chic effect, pair it with a Calathea ‘Fusion White’ with its cream and soft green marbling, or a Calathea insignis with its long, undulate leaves dotted with dark spots.

Location

The calathea can find its place in any moderately lit room of the house, always away from direct sunlight. However, avoid placing it in a draught or a room that is too dry, as this could damage its leaves. A tropical conservatory with a warm and humid atmosphere would also meet all its needs.

Maintenance and care

Water once a week, preferably with non-calcareous water at room temperature. Mist regularly 2 to 3 times a week. In winter, reduce watering but maintain misting.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring every 2 to 3 years, when the roots fill the pot. Use a slightly larger container.
Use a well-draining and aerated potting mix, blend with coconut fibre and clay pebbles for better moisture retention without excess water.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) once a month in spring and summer. Reduce in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

The Calathea Peacock naturally sheds its oldest leaves. Clean the leaves with a soft, damp cloth to prevent dust buildup.
This variety requires regular monitoring. However, no specific pruning is needed: simply remove any damaged or yellowed leaves to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice

Moderate susceptibility to diseases, particularly in overly dry air or from overwatering. To combat red spider mites, mist the foliage with soft water and place the plant in a more humid environment.
