More information

A houseplant prized for its elongated foliage, featuring two tones of light and dark green with a beautiful broad-striped pattern. At nightfall, Calathea folds its leaves before unfurling them again in the morning. It prefers a spot without direct sunlight and high ambient humidity to thrive fully. It is sensitive to water quality: it does not appreciate hard water or mineral build-up, which can cause brown edges on its foliage.

Description

Calathea 'Freddie', commonly known as the peacock plant or prayer plant, is an ornamental and bright variety. Its lanceolate foliage features dark green striations in broad stripes radiating from the central vein on a light green background. This cultivar is relatively low-maintenance, thriving in average humidity. Originating from the tropics, Calatheas bring a touch of exoticism and colour to your interior, whether styled bohemian or as a plant enthusiast's "jungle".

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, 'Freddie' is a cultivar of the Calathea concinna species (synonym Goeppertia concinna), native to the humid forests of Brazil, where it flourishes under the dense canopy. Its broad, elongated leaves display streaked patterns in two shades of green. It forms a bushy plant reaching 60 cm in all directions at maturity. Like other calatheas, its leaves fold up at night, a phenomenon known as nastic movement. It prefers indirect, filtered light, as direct sunlight may scorch its delicate leaves. It's best kept away from south-facing windows and thrives in a humid atmosphere, close to the conditions these plants experience in the wild.

Calathea 'Freddie' is unparalleled for adding a splash of colour and exotic flair to rooms such as the living room, bedroom, or office, where it can be placed on furniture or a pedestal. To create a harmonious setting, pair it with plants sharing similar needs, such as Maranta leuconeura, known for its variegated foliage, or the tricolour-leaved Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar'.
