Description

The Calathea 'Fusion White' is an indoor plant with spectacular foliage, blending deep green, white, and sometimes delicate pink hues, complemented by lilac. This variety forms an absolutely stunning display of leaves, noticeable from afar. In interior design, it fits perfectly with contemporary styles. To enjoy it for many years, it is essential to provide what it loves: a bright spot but without direct sunlight, high ambient humidity, and regular watering, ensuring the substrate remains slightly moist without being waterlogged. Also, avoid draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, the Calathea 'Fusion White' (or Goeppertia lietzei 'White Fusion') is a perennial plant with a bushy and compact habit, typically reaching a height and spread of 40 to 60 cm. Its elliptical leaves about 20 cm long have a leathery texture with an undulate margin. The upper surface displays random marbling of dark green, creamy white, and sometimes pale pink, making each leaf unique, while the underside showcases purple tones. The growth of this plant is moderate, regularly producing new leaves. Although flowering indoors is rare, it may occasionally produce small, discreet white flowers. Like many calatheas, this plant is prone to nyctinasty, meaning it folds its leaves at nightfall and unfolds them at dawn. Native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly Brazil, Calatheas thrive in humid and shaded environments. These natural conditions explain its needs: filtered light, high humidity, and temperatures between 18 and 27 °C. It does not tolerate temperatures below 15 °C.

Invite the Calathea 'Fusion White' into a bright living room, a bedroom, or a shaded corner of a heated conservatory. For a successful decorative effect, place this plant on a natural wood shelf, in a white or powdery pink ceramic pot that will highlight its artistic leaves. Its elegance will perfectly complement a boho chic, Scandinavian, or minimalist interior. Pair it with a Maranta leuconeura 'Fascinator' for its graphic variegated foliage or with a Philodendron Brasil with green and golden leaves for a refined contrast.

Maintenance and care

Keep the compost slightly moist, without excess water. Water when the soil is dry on the surface. Mist regularly to increase humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot the young plant every 2 to 3 years, or as soon as the roots fill the pot, in spring.
Use a houseplant compost enriched with humus. Add clay pebbles or perlite for optimal drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) every two weeks during the growth period (spring, summer).

Houseplant care

The plant naturally sheds its oldest leaves. Remove dry or damaged leaves at the base with clean and disinfected scissors. Wipe the leaves to prevent dust buildup.
Pruning is not necessary.

In case of red spider mite infestation, mist the plant frequently to increase humidity. For scale insects, clean the leaves with a cloth dampened with 70% alcohol.
