Description

Calathea picturata 'Crimson', commonly known as the peacock plant, is a remarkable houseplant celebrated for its vividly coloured foliage. Of tropical origin, this variety features leaves with a bright pink centre edged with dark green. Few plants can bring such an exotic and colourful touch to your interior. This variety blends seamlessly into various decor styles, such as a contemporary living room or a bohemian setting. It also perfectly complements a "jungle" or "tropical" themed interior.

Belonging to the Marantaceae familyCalathea picturata (synonyms Goeppertia picturata, Calathea vandenheckei, Phrynium vandenheckei) is native to the humid forests of the Amazon, where it thrives under the dense canopy. The 'Crimson' variety is a cultivar selected for its splendid foliage. Its leaves are approximately 20 cm long and display a bright pink upper surface surrounded by a dark green border, while the underside is purple. This unique colouration makes it a standout feature in interior decor. It prefers indirect, filtered light, as direct sunlight may scorch its delicate leaves. A spot in bright, dappled shade, sheltered from drafts, is therefore ideal. Good ambient humidity (60-80%) and a temperature consistently above 15°C are essential for balanced growth. Additionally, like other calatheas, its leaves fold up at night, a phenomenon known as nyctinasty.

Calathea 'Crimson' will add colour and exotic flair to the living room, bedroom, or office. With proper care, it becomes a highly rewarding plant. To create a harmonious atmosphere, pair it with plants sharing similar needs, such as Maranta leuconeura, known for its variegated foliage, or Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar' with its tricoloured leaves. These combinations will enhance the jungle effect and bring an appealing diversity.
