Description
The Calathea 'Yellow Fusion' or 'Peacock Plant' is much more than a houseplant: it is a true living spectacle! Its beautifully variegated, deep green, bright white, and luminous yellow foliage lights up any interior. But what makes it truly unique is its ability to move its leaves in rhythm with day and night, a natural phenomenon called nyctinasty. In the evening, its leaves gently fold up as if in prayer, and reopen at dawn, creating a daily botanical ballet. Perfect for modern or exotic interiors, this variety of Peacock Plant combines exoticism, elegance, and dynamism.
Belonging to the Marantaceae family, the Calathea 'Yellow Fusion' is a horticultural cultivar derived from the Goeppertia lietzei (formerly Calathea lietzei) species. This perennial has a bushy habit with leaves that rise gracefully from the base, forming a dense and decorative clump. It typically reaches a height of 50 to 70 cm and a similar spread depending on growing conditions. Its leaves are elliptical and slightly undulate at the edges. Their upper surface blends dark green, creamy white, and vibrant yellow hues, while the purple underside adds a touch of mystery. This spectacular colouring makes this Calathea variety one of the most sought-after.
Although flowering is rare indoors, it occasionally produces small, discreet white flowers. However, it is primarily cherished for its decorative foliage. Its sibling, the Calathea 'White Fusion', shares the same origin and features a similar foliage, but variegated with pure white and pale pink, equally enchanting.
Native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly Brazil, the botanical Goeppertia lietzei species thrives under a dense tree canopy where it enjoys dappled light and constant humidity. Indoors, it is essential to recreate these conditions by providing the plant with indirect light, high humidity (at least 60%), and a well-draining substrate, while avoiding draughts. It thrives between 18 and 24°C.
The Calathea 'Yellow Fusion' is unmatched for creating a tropical nature corner in your home. Its foliage brightens up a contemporary living room, bedroom, or even a zen office. Place it in a white or gold ceramic pot to enhance its chic appeal or choose a wicker planter for a bohemian style. It also thrives in a bright, heated conservatory or a reading nook. With its exotic charm, it will fit seamlessly into any modern, bohemian, or urban jungle décor. You can pair it with the Syngonium 'Golden Allusion' and a silver-leafed Aglaonema.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
