More information

This houseplant stands out with its elongated foliage, adorned with spectacular patterns blending various shades of green, white, and pink. Each evening, the Calathea gracefully folds its leaves, only to unfurl them again at dawn, a fascinating phenomenon. It prefers a bright location away from direct sunlight and requires high ambient humidity to thrive. Sensitive to water quality, it does not appreciate hard water or mineral build-up, which can cause its leaves to brown.

Description

The Calathea sanguinea, often encountered under the name Stromanthe sanguinea, is a botanical species forming a clump with upright and arched leaves. They are elongated and narrow, and remarkably coloured in green, pink, and white. Commonly known as Stromanthe 'Triostar', the Calathea is a tropical plant grown in European climates as a houseplant often prized for the colour and patterns of its exotic foliage. This species appreciates slightly brighter conditions than most Marantaceae (their family), without direct sunlight, but near a window that diffuses bright light.

Belonging to the Marantaceae family, the Calathea sanguinea has the valid botanical name Stromanthe thalia and the synonym Stromanthe sanguinea. It is native to the humid forests of Brazil, particularly in the Atlantic forest region. It forms a somewhat untidy clump, with long upright or trailing leaves, reaching 60 cm in all directions at maturity. Its elongated leaves feature striate patterns and various shades of green, as well as white and pink. This unique colouring makes it a centrepiece in interior design. Moreover, like other calatheas, its leaves fold up at night, a phenomenon known as nyctinasty.

The Calathea sanguinea is unparalleled for adding a touch of colour and exoticism to rooms such as a living room, bedroom, or office. It prefers bright, but indirect light, as direct sunlight could burn its delicate leaves. It is advisable to filter south-facing windows with a sheer curtain. It requires a fairly high ambient humidity to thrive, around 60% minimum consistently, and soil that remains slightly moist with a well-draining substrate. To create a harmonious atmosphere, pair it with plants with similar needs, such as other Marantaceae that enjoy bright light, like the Calathea makoyana.

Location
