Description

The Limonium sinuatum Forever mix brings together a collection of wavy-leaved Statice plants that offer a wide variety of flowers on strong and compact stems. They are perennial frost-tender plants, most often grown as annuals, forming bushy clumps topped with clusters of tiny papery flowers in white, pink, lilac, yellow, bright pink, or purple, depending on the plants. They are beautiful in borders and rock gardens and valuable in fresh or dried bouquets, as they retain their colour for a long time. Grow them in full sun, in well-drained, light soil that is not too dry in summer.

Limonium sinuatum, commonly known as Sea Lavender, is a perennial herbaceous plant of Mediterranean origin belonging to the plumbaginaceae family. This bushy plant has an upright and slightly stiff habit, forming flowering clumps that reach 60-70 cm (24-28in) high and 30 cm (12in) in diameter. It develops a dense basal rosette of oblong, wavy, lanceolate, bright green, deciduous leaves. From July to September, winged floral stems appear, highly branched and adorned with a few small leaves, carrying 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) clusters of tiny flowers with brightly coloured papery bracts at their tips. The flower itself is much more discreet, almost invisible. They come in almost all the vibrant colours of the rainbow, except red. The flowers are nectar-rich and attract many pollinating insects. The fruit is a capsule containing a single seed. This plant easily self-seeds in light soil. In Mediterranean climates, it will germinate in autumn, bloom in spring, and enter a period of rest in summer.

Limonium sinuatum is one of the easiest flowers to dry; simply cut the stems as long as possible and hang them upside down in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. Their colour will soften slightly but be retained for a long time. The robust plants in the 'Forever' mix also help brighten borders and rock gardens alongside more massive blooms. They can be associated with yarrows and Russian sages, which are also very light and undemanding.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (greenhouse, cold frame, etc.) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Statices are truly easy to grow. They like sun, and well-drained, sandy, dry soil. They withstand sea spray and strong winds, making them perfect candidates for seaside gardens. Plant in spring, in warm soil. Once in place, simply remove faded flowers to stimulate new flowers. At the end of the season, prune the stems if you wish to try to preserve the plants.

Like many Mediterranean plants, statice is very drought-resistant, but it needs water to bloom. In its region of origin, it blooms before summer drought. This plant does not like humidity, which makes it susceptible to Botrytis, grey mould.
