Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Nature's Crown' is a perpetual variety that stands out for its almost invariably double flowers. They have bubbling petals with an undulating all-golden edge on a background of peach-pink illuminated by a beautiful yellow-green eye. The foliage partially persists in winter. The flowering period extends from June-July to late August-early September. A very beautiful perennial to be prominently placed in the garden!

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the family Liliaceae or Hemerocallidaceae according to classifications. They are hardy perennial plants with deciduous foliage, sometimes semi-evergreen. The variety 'Nature's Crown' was obtained in 2003 by Petit. It is a tetraploid variety with a double set of chromosomes, giving it increased vigour and flowers with a thicker texture than classical diploid varieties. The plant forms a fairly dense clump that will reach approximately 61 cm (24in) in height, with a relative spread of 40-50 cm (16-20in). Hemerocallis tends to spread a little when it likes its surroundings. The flowers measure approximately 14 cm (6in) in diameter. They are double in 90% of cases. Each flower blooms in the morning, lasting only a day, but the flowering repeats in successive waves throughout the summer. The foliage is linear, bright green, semi-evergreen in winter. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more opulent and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in shade and full sun. Some can be invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty, it is beautifully exuberant and blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers (lilies, agapanthus, ixias, etc.) can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Nature's Crown' is a decorative variety to be highlighted alongside white, pink, orange, or mauve blooms. It pairs well with small grasses (Stipa, Pennisetum), lavender, and chamomile. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Nature's Crown' in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow both in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
