Arrived in perfect condition, I planted it in a large old metal basin-pot with peat soil and a drainage system. It survived the winter very well and the foliage looks beautiful, I'm looking forward to the first buds.

Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla Wudu is a compact and bushy variety of hydrangea. Its dark green foliage forms a beautiful setting for its white ball-shaped inflorescences, from July to September. They open from light green buds, turn white, then revert to green as they fade, without turning pink in late summer, unlike some other varieties.

The flowering of 'Wudu' is generous and prolonged, adding a bright touch to shady corners of the garden. Its inflorescences, measuring 10 to 15 cm in diameter, are composed of single sterile florets, giving the whole an understated elegance. The deciduous foliage, meanwhile, consists of ovate to elliptical leaves, finely dentate, measuring between 10 and 15 cm long. They turn yellow before falling in autumn. The bush will eventually reach an average of 1 m in all directions.

The Wudu Hydrangea fits well in a flower bed, stands alone, or can be grown in a large pot on a terrace or near an entrance. This bush prefers rich, fresh, well-drained soil, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, and partial shade. This variety pairs beautifully with perennials with dark, black, or purple foliage, creating a striking contrast. Pair it also with evergreen ferns like Polystichum setiferum 'Plumosum Densum', whose delicate texture highlights its rounded inflorescences. Nearby, giant hostas such as 'Empress Wu', with their lush, veined foliage, will accentuate its compact structure. For extended floral interest, pair it with Astilbe 'Vision in Red'.

Planting and care

Plant the Hydrangea macrophylla Wudu in spring or early autumn, preferably in a lightly shaded position, such as against an east-facing wall, or even a north-facing one. Shelter it from cold, drying winds. It does not require heather soil but thrives in deep, cool, well-drained, and fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, position the root ball at least 30-40 cm away from the wall and incorporate plenty of well-rotted compost to help retain moisture in the soil. This variety is hardy down to approximately -15°C.
