Our range of Yacon. This Andean root vegetable is grown for its sweet and juicy tubercles reminiscent of pears. The earth pear, in Latin Smallanthus sonchifolius, is a close relative of Dahlias and their stumps look similar. The Yacon ‘Red’ produces large reddish tubercles, while the ‘Morado’ variety with purple skin is particularly productive and hardy. Less known, the ‘New Zealand’ yields light and crunchy roots. The tubercles can be eaten raw like fruit or cooked in savoury or sweet dishes.

Earth pears are tall non-hardy perennials that thrive in rich, well-drained soil and a sunny exposure. They are planted in May after the last frosts and harvested in autumn after the first frosts. Store the rootstocks away from the cold for perennial cultivation.
