Description

Let yourself be seduced by the Clematis 'Glorious Red', it has numerous dark red flowers with yellow lemon stamens throughout the summer. This small clematis will look good in all gardens, to dress up a fence or trellis or even climbing a rose or a bush with silver foliage. It will also be sensational in a large pot on the terrace. This is a hardy climbing plant, undemanding in terms of soil and resistant to diseases.

Clematis are perennial climbing plants from the ranunculaceae family, found in both hemispheres, especially in Europe, the Himalayas, China, Australia and North and Central America. It is a genus with a great diversity of colours, shapes, and sizes of flowers. The Glorious Red variety is a recent creation from the J van Zoest BV nurseries located in Boskoop, Netherlands. It belongs to the group of C. viticella, known for their resistance to diseases and chalky, slightly dry soils in summer.
The Glorious Red clematis will reach about 2.5 to 3 m high, with a spread of 1.5 m. Its single flowers measure between 8 and 10 cm in diameter and resemble small windmills with their incurved petals. They appear on the current year's shoots, continuously from June-July to September. The flowers are a deep red with a velvety appearance and reveal a lemon-yellow centre. The green pinnate leaves disappear in winter. This clematis clings to its support through petioles transformed into tendrils.

This moderately growing clematis thrives in a pot, equipped with a stake or obelisk, on a terrace. In the garden, let it climb on a fence or trellis. It is perfect if you want to let it grow freely at the base of a rose or a bush that it will dress with its red flowers. Opt for a bush with silver-gray foliage like Caryopteris 'Sterling Silver' which is covered with blue flowers in summer. Pair your 'Glorious Red' clematis with the David Austin 'Roald Dahl' English rose with its magnificent orange flowers and at the base of this ensemble you can plant Coreopsis 'Desert Coral' with flowers ranging from peach to red.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Glorious Red' will appreciate a sunny exposure or light shade. It is customary to say that the clematis likes to have its head in the sun and its feet in the shade. You have two options to shade its roots and the base of its stems: place a flat tile or plant some perennials at the base of your clematis. Plant it in fertile soil, enriched with well-decomposed manure or compost, moist and above all well-drained. Clematis plants suffer from wilt in overly wet soil, but varieties derived from C. viticella seem to be less sensitive. In the planting hole, tilt the root ball towards the support and bury the base of the stems under 7 to 10 cm of soil. Add coarse sand if your soil is not well-draining. After planting, prune the clematis stems to about 25 cm from the base, above a nice pair of buds. During the first few weeks, water regularly. In February, mulch with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems. Train the stems to their support, without crushing them, until the plant clings by itself. Clematis plants also like to grow freely in a shrub or rose. Prune the stems to 25 cm from the ground in March, above a pair of healthy buds.
Voles and slugs can attack clematis plants and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential pests.
