Description

Clematis viticella 'Rosalyn' is another recent Dutch creation from C. viticella, which is a true gem for the garden. It produces an abundance of double and tousled small flowers of a rich reddish-purple colour. They almost completely cover the foliage. This vigorous, compact, and graceful clematis tolerates the sun well. It is perfect for trellises and fences, easily turning any support into a floral cloak. It is also sublime in a pot on a patio or balcony.

The genus Clematis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. 'Rosalyn' is a horticultural variety derived from Clematis viticella, and it belongs to the group of clematis that flower in summer on the current year's shoots. It is a semi-woody, climbing perennial plant that will not exceed 2m (7ft) in height, with a spread of 1m² (3ft²). It has a rapid growth rate.

This clematis bears viticella-type flowers. From June to September, it produces small flowers measuring 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. The bisexual flowers are either solitary or grouped in cymes, erect or pendulous. They have 12 pink-red-purple fringed tepals that are star-shaped with a black stamen centre and yellow anthers. The flowering is followed by decorative greyish-silvery feathery fruits. The olive-green leaves are simple and palmate with irregularly incised edges. This clematis clings to the support or host plant through petioles transformed into tendrils.

Plant your clematis alongside climbing roses to extend the flowering period of walls and pergolas until the end of summer. It is a diverse genus, with flowers in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. 'Rosalyn' is easily grown in the garden. Thanks to its small size, it will also thrive in a pot on a balcony or next to a doorway to welcome visitors with its long-lasting flowering.

Planting and care

Ideally, plant in the sun, in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Shade the roots and base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Herbaceous species prefer full sun and wilt in overly wet soil.

Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), lightened with good quality compost. Plant it by covering the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Water regularly and generously during the first few weeks. Do not overwater, as stagnant water can lead to the development of fungus at the base of the plant. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to reduce the risk of wilting while encouraging vigorous shoots from the stump. After planting, prune the stems to around 30cm (12in) above a pair of buds.

Mulch in February with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems.

Train the stems, without constricting them, until the plant can cling by itself. Clematis also enjoy growing freely on neighbouring plants.

This variety flowers on new growth in summer, so prune it in March, leaving it at around 25cm (10in) from the ground (slightly longer on older specimens). Cut cleanly with secateurs above two large buds.

Voles and grey worms can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential pests.
