Description
Astilbe rivularis 'Grandiflora' can reach a spectacular height of 1.70m (6ft) under good conditions.
Its floral spikes form airy, slightly arched cream-white panicles to rival the beauty of goat's beard (Aruncus dioicus). Fresh or dried, the flowers of Astilbe rivularis are appreciated for their long life in bouquets.
Its finely divided green foliage is deciduous.
Astilbes are perennials that thrive in heavy, moist soils, essential along the edges of a pond and in marshy areas. They prefer partially shaded and bright locations without direct sunlight. They bloom from June to July, a transitional period where spring flowers are finishing and summer flowers just beginning. Astilbes produce colourful panicles of flowers, ranging from pink to white or red, depending on the variety.

Planting and care
Astilbe primarily thrives in partial shade. You can plant it in gentle sunlight but avoid the hot midday hours. Plant it in spring or autumn in cool, moist, fertile soil, rich in organic matter. You can plant it in a marshy area. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks after planting to aid root development. Astilbe requires very little maintenance, just keep the soil moist and add compost and organic fertiliser in spring.
