I didn't have any trouble with the sowing; the seeds germinated well. The young plants all took well in the open ground or in pots. Some experienced rapid growth, while others were slower. It is worth noting that the hummingbird hawk-moths seem to enjoy them.

Description

Laurentia 'Stargazer Mixed' is a small, tender perennial plant, often grown as an annual in colder climates. This wonderful collection forms dense, rounded clumps of finely cut foliage. From summer to autumn, the well-branched stems are covered with masses of small, fragrant, star-shaped flowers in harmonious shades of white, pink and mauve. Perfect for quickly garnishing hanging baskets, window boxes and borders!

Laurentia, also named Solenopsis axillaris or Isotoma axillaris, is a tender perennial (often treated as an annual) native to Australia. It quickly forms a compact, nicely rounded, branched clump (30 cm tall and wide) with narrow, tapering and serrated evergreen dark green leaves. Between May and October, sometimes until the first frosts, it produces an abundance of small, 5-lobed, star-shaped flowers in shades of pink, white and mauve. They are pleasantly fragrant. This heat and drought resistant plant flowers best in fertile, cool soil.

Laurentia 'Stargazer Mixed' is an easy to grow and very floriferous plant. With its attractive star-shaped blooms, it can be used as a bedding plant, grown en masse in borders, and of course in pots, hanging baskets and window boxes. It combines well with a variety of other annuals or perennials such as begonias, petunias, pink baby's breath or pelargoniums for example.

Planting and care

Sow from January to March in pots on the surface of a good quality sowing mix. Cover the seeds lightly with vermiculite. Place the pots in a propagator or in a polythene bag and keep at a temperature of 15-21 °C until germination. Transplant the seedlings into individual pots. Place them outdoors when all risk of frost is over. Laurentia requires very little maintenance. Make sure that the plants don't run out of water and remove spent flowers from time to time. Caution: the sap of this plant is a possible skin irritant.
