Graines de Julienne des Dames - Hesperis matronalis Alba
My mother always told me to plant julienne. At 72 years old, I plant them everywhere around my house, in every nook and cranny, as long as there is a little bit of soil. And it comes back the following year.

White Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis Alba), also known as Garden Rocket or Dame's Violet, is a vigorous perennial that bears clusters of small white flowers from late spring. It emits a sweet violet fragrance in the evening. A charming old-fashioned addition to country gardens, it looks stunning when paired with Lupins.
Native to Europe and Central Asia and belonging to the Brassicaceae family, Hesperis matronalis is a short-lived perennial, often grown as a biennial. Its ephemeral nature is greatly compensated by its ability to self-seed. Its simple flowers are arranged in spikes on upright, branched stems. Its medium green leaves are deciduous, rough, and lanceolate. It has an airy bushy shape, reaching 75 cm (30in) high and 60 cm (24in) wide.
Sometimes referred to as "Grandmother's flowers," it blends well in Cottage and Herb gardens, where it pairs wonderfully with The Chatelaine Lupin, Baptisias, and Alliums.
The name Hesperis comes from the Greek word meaning evening, as its fragrance is most noticeable at nightfall. Plant it near the house to fully enjoy this. Lastly, it is a nectar-rich plant that will delight bees and butterflies.
Growing Dame's Rocket is easy; it thrives in full sun or partial shade, in moist, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. It is hardy down to -15°C.

Botanical data
Dame's Rocket seeds can be sown from May to June.
You can either:
- sow the seeds outdoors, in a nursery bed, 1 cm (0in) deep, spaced in rows of 30 cm (12in). The plants can then be transplanted to their final position in autumn. Recommended spacing: 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) between each plant.
- directly sow at the final location to create a flower border by mixing with seeds of other annuals or biennials, for example. Scatter the seeds thinly in well-prepared soil and cover them with a thin layer of compost.
It will normally flower in the second year after sowing.
Dame's Rocket prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and sunny or semi-shaded positions.
In overly confined or humid situations, it can be affected by mildew.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
