Description

Brachyscome or Brachycome angustifolia 'Brasco Violet' is an excellent recent horticultural creation from 2011. This spreading annual plant offers an abundance of flowers similar to small daisies in a bright blue-violet colour, illuminated by a yellow centre during the summer. Its sturdy habit and abundant fragrant summer flowering make it an ideal plant for borders, containers, and hanging baskets. The Brachycome prefers a warm and sunny location. It requires fertile and well-drained soil and tolerates drought fairly well.

Brachycome angustifolia is a stoloniferous herbaceous plant from the large Asteraceae family, native to Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. Theoretically perennial, this plant only lives for two years, but its rapid growth allows it to be cultivated in our climates as an annual. The 'Brasco Violet' variety forms a flowering mound that is 25 to 30 cm (9.8 to 11.8 inches) tall and just as wide. It is floriferous and early-flowering, and also stands out for its more intense colouration and larger heads. Blooming from May to September, they resemble asters or daisies with intense mauve petals surrounding a small yellow centre, and are borne on thin stems emerging from medium green-grey and downy foliage, finely lobed.

Brachycomes grow very quickly, are floriferous, and require little maintenance. They are not demanding in terms of water and are particularly suitable for container gardening, hanging baskets, rock gardens, or summer borders. They happily coexist with other annuals such as blue Lobelia, Bacopa, and Diascia, allowing for multiple colour combinations. They, for example, go wonderfully well with red balcony geraniums, Surfinias, Supertunias, or petunias, as well as yellow Bidens or red-flowering sages.

An ecological asset: Throughout the summer, the nectar-rich flowers of Brachycome 'Brasco Violet' attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. A great way to improve your garden's ecosystem and promote fruit and vegetable production in your vegetable garden.

Green plants measuring 4 to 8cm (1.6 - 3.1 inches) in trays of 5 small plugs with a diameter of 2.8 cm (0.8 inches) and a height of 4 cm (1.6 inches). Our plants are at least eight weeks old and are strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in small plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your brachycomes in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (brachycomes tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant them in a sunny position. They need a light and humus-rich soil, not too chalky, but above all well-draining. They tolerate occasional drought, but will need regular watering during hot summer temperatures. They perish in a soil saturated with water permanently. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors before the first frosts, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter.
