The Stenocereus are among the most spectacular columnar cacti, their upright, ramified silhouette and monumental habit reminiscent of the desert landscapes of Mexico and Central America. They are grown in pots or greenhouses in our climate for their imposing stature. Among the species offered, Stenocereus thurberi, the Organ Pipe Cactus, forms upright, ramified stems that resemble the pipes of an organ, with pronounced midribs and regularly spaced thorns. Stenocereus griseus, with a more slender habit, is recognisable by its bluish-grey stems and rapid growth in warm climates. Even more striking, Stenocereus marginatus features very straight, almost angular midribs and aligned areoles, giving it a highly structured appearance. Stenocereus queretaroensis, with an arborescent habit, is cultivated in its native lands for its edible fruits. Rarer still, Stenocereus beneckei has grey, thinner stems with spaced-out areoles. They are closely related to Pachycereus pringlei, Carnegiea, or Lophocereus.
These columnar cacti require full sun exposure, a very well-draining substrate (cactus mix), spaced-out watering in summer, and a dry winter rest between 5 and 8 °C. They will appreciate being placed outdoors during the warmer months.
