Description

The Epipremnum aureum is the most common species generating many cultivars of this plant often called Pothos or Scindapsus. It is a fast-growing liana that develops heart-shaped, medium to dark green leaves speckled here and there with small variegations in the form of yellow traces on the lamina. Easy to grow, it is a low-maintenance plant regarding light conditions, thriving in moderate to bright light (without direct sunlight).

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Epipremnum aureum also known as Golden Pothos or Devil's Ivy is a perennial plant that forms lianas which can be trained to climb up a support or left to trail down from a pot or hanging basket. Under good growing conditions, it can reach impressive lengths—some enthusiasts cover walls and even ceilings with their favourite pothos. Its growth is quite rapid, quickly forming a plant 30 cm wide and 50–60 cm long, eventually reaching 90 cm wide and 3 m long in ideal conditions. This generous houseplant gradually develops small, cordate leaves with a smooth, slightly glossy texture randomly speckled with yellow on some leaves.

Native to the islands of French Polynesia, the Epipremnum aureum is a climbing species that uses its aerial roots to cling to tree trunks and rocks. In its humid tropical habitat, this epiphytic plant can grow up to 20 m high by twining around tree branches and other epiphytes with its aerial roots. Many cultivars specifically grown for the houseplant market derive from this species.

The Golden Pothos is an easy-to-grow ornamental plant perfect for beginners. Low-maintenance and fast-growing, it develops long stems ideal for creating a cascading effect from a hanging pot, a macramé hanger, a shelf, or for climbing up a support or wall with attachment points. Pair it with other Araceae family plants such as Anthuriums and Syngoniums or with other Epipremnum cultivars—either solid-coloured or with different variegations—to create beautiful contrasts and an elegant, exotic atmosphere. Consider for example the 'Cebu Blue' with its elongated, perforated leaves and bluish sheen. The lushness of Epipremnums makes them essential for crafting an indoor jungle effect.
