Camellias are hardy shrubs sought after for their flowers, fragrance, the beauty of the flower and their evergreen foliage. The elliptical leaves are green and appear glossy. The flowering is either winter or autumn.
The colour of the flowers can be white, pink or red. The flower shapes are diverse and some are fragrant. Plant Camellias in acidic soil in a mix of ericaceous compost and garden soil as a specimen or in a group accompanied by Azaleas and heathers. The soil must be damp, rich and light. Camellias appreciate shaded situations protected from cold and drying winds.
