Description

Globe Amaranth or Gomphrena globosa 'White', is an excellent annual flower for fresh or dried bouquets. It offers graceful globes of very bright white flowers. This plant requires virtually no care. It tolerates heat and drought and produces lovely flowers. It brings life to flower beds from July to September with its architectural presence and can be used in bouquets, extending the season by drying them.

This Globe Amaranth is best placed at the edge of a flower bed. Given its habit, its effect is more pronounced when planted in groups. Each plant has several upright stems, each topped with a single globular flower. The elongated lanceolate leaves are rather small (5 cm) and attached close to the stem (referred to as sessile). The visual impact is achieved by multiple plants. The plant can reach 50 cm in height when in flower. Gomphrena globosa, native to Central America, prefers a sunny exposure.

Architectural Globe Amaranth is a plant that can be scattered among other annuals or perennials. Its multiple round heads bring unity to a diverse flower bed. Plant them with cosmos, lavenders, or daisies, for example. Alternatively, plant them en masse while varying the colours. It is also a lovely vegetable garden flower. It attracts pollinating insects, especially butterflies.

Like some of its relatives in the Amaranthaceae family, you can use it in dried arrangements. Amaranthus in Greek means "that does not wither". To keep them looking their best, cut them as soon as the flowers appear and colour to retain their shape and evocative colour.

Planting and care

The White Amaranth is preferably sown under cover in a seed tray from March. Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of substrate kept slightly moist. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, you can separate them and put them in pots if the frost period is not over and keep them warm. Otherwise, you can plant them directly in the ground, spacing them 30 cm apart. Watering will only be necessary in case of drought during the first weeks after planting.
