Description

Helianthus annuus 'Gummy Bear' naturally produces well-branched stems and can reach between 90 and 120 cm in height and 60 cm in width. With its very double lemon yellow flowers, it will brighten up your flower beds, borders, and pots throughout the summer. The flowers are carried by short but sturdy stems, perfect for small country bouquets. Discover this fast-growing annual plant, easy to sow and cultivate in the sun.

From the Asteraceae family, everyone knows Helianthus annuus, better known for the famous oil extracted from its seeds, sunflower oil. The Gummy Bear variety stands out for its very original flowers. They are very double, a beautiful lemon yellow revealing a green centre and bloom from July to September. They measure between 7 and 12 cm in diameter. They bear no resemblance to traditional sunflower flowers. They are excellent cut flowers, fresh or dried, even though their stems are quite short. For a fresh bouquet, cut them when they start to open, preferably in the morning. Remove the leaves from the bottom, leaving only 2 or 3 leaves below the flower. Change the water in the vase for fresh water every day. For a dried bouquet, cut them when they are fully open and hang them in a dry place.

This well-branched and compact variety will find a place in all gardens: flower bed, border, in the vegetable garden to add some colour, or even in a large pot.

It is an easy-to-grow plant that enjoys the sun and moist, well-drained soil. It is a rather water-hungry plant. Water it regularly. In case of wind, stake the stems.

Planting and care

Sow the Gummy Bear Sunflower from March to May in a pot for planting in the ground after the last frost. Place one seed per pot or in a hole with 2 or 3 seeds (keep the most beautiful young plant). Cover the seeds lightly with seed compost. Water generously with a fine rain. Sunflower seeds need light to germinate, without direct sunlight, and a temperature of about 20°C during the day. At night, the temperature can be cooler (around 15°C).

The seeds will take between 7 and 14 days to germinate. Keep the soil moist, but not excessively, during growth. 15 days before their final planting (after the last frost), start gradually acclimating them to a temperature of 15°C.

Once all risk of frost has passed, it's time to plant your young sunflower plants (they should have at least 3 to 4 true leaves) in the garden or in a pot. Choose a sunny location and well-drained moist soil. Water regularly, as it is water-hungry.

It is also possible to sow your sunflowers directly in place from May onwards.

Quick tip: stagger your sowings to extend their flowering until autumn.

Sunflowers can be susceptible to powdery mildew and aphids, and snails and slugs may attack their young leaves.
