Very well received and very quickly. How far apart should I plant them... let me check... and should I soak the seeds beforehand??

Description

Helianthus maximiliani, or Maximilian Sunflower, is a perennial plant that grows rapidly, with branched stems reaching between 1.20m (4ft) and 2.50m (8ft). They bear about thirty bright yellow single flowers that form a column of flowers measuring 60 to 80cm (24 to 32in).
Its flowers resemble daisies with pointed petals, measuring 7cm (3in) in diameter, and emit a delightful chocolate fragrance.
The main stem branches out and each branch carries a flower facing towards the sky. Three stems make for a splendid wildflower bouquet.
This magnificent flowering occurs from June to October.
The vigorous roots of the Maximilian Sunflower quickly spread the clump. In autumn, mound the edge of your flower bed and remove some of the roots on the periphery to limit its expansion.

To enjoy your Heliathus bouquets for longer, follow these tips:

  • Cut the flowers in the morning. Use a knife that has been thoroughly cleaned beforehand.
  • Change the water in the vase every day with fresh water.

In the garden, sow Helianthus maximiliani at the back of the flower bed, where it will majestically dominate the other flowers.

Until before flowering, the plant optimizes its growth by following the sun's path. This phenomenon, called heliotropism, has given rise to some of its common names: Heliotrope, Sunflower, Sunflower, Garden Sunflower...

An ecological asset:
Throughout summer, the nectar-rich flowers of Helianthus attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. It's a great way to improve the ecosystem of your garden and promote fruit and vegetable production in your vegetable patch.
The oil-rich seeds are particularly appreciated by birds (Parrots, Tits, etc.). At the end of flowering, harvest them to make the birds happy during the winter shortage.

Planting and care

Sow Maximilian's Sunflower from February to April in a seed tray. Use a good quality compost that you will sieve on the surface to ensure the seed is well connected to its substrate. Before sowing, lightly press down the compost with a board. Scatter your seeds freely. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost on top or using vermiculite, lightly press down and water generously with a fine rain. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 18°C (64.4°F) to 21°C (69.8°F).

The seeds will germinate in 7 to 21 days. As soon as the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7cm (3in) pots. Keep the compost moist but not excessive during growth. Then, 15 days before their final planting, start gradually acclimatizing them to a temperature of 15°C (59°F).

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good handful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 60cm (24in) apart.

Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain beauty and promote their renewal.

Protect your seedlings from attacks by snails and slugs, which are fond of these young plants. By sowing chives near your sunflowers, you will deter aphids from settling in.

After flowering, cut the stems down to 50cm (20in) high.
