Description

These Dwarf Nasturtiums -  Tom Thumb Mix are annual herbaceous plants with a compact habit, ideal for growing in pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. Its foliage naturally trails to cover its container.

On the balcony, the Tom Thumb Mix Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus nanum) will generously fill pots and window boxes. It will blend perfectly with trailing annuals such as petunias, ivy geraniums, and verbenas. Planted at the front of flowerbeds, it will take its rightful place and act as ground cover by suppressing weeds.

Its dark green leaves, measuring 5 to 6 cm (2in) in diameter, have slightly undulate edges and beautifully complement the flowering. The Tom Thumb Mix Nasturtium grows stems up to 35 cm (14in) long. Tom Thumb Mix Nasturtiums will reward you with their generous flowering from July to September-October.

The single flowers, measuring 5 to 6 cm (2in) in diameter, have a cut funnel shape and a long spur pointing backwards. The main colours are pink, yellow, and dark red.
The nasturtium prefers a warm and sunny exposure to showcase its flowering, but it can tolerate light shade. It can grow in any type of soil, even poor. Its large seed size and minimal soil and cultivation requirements make it suitable for beginner gardeners and children.

Originally from South America, it is sometimes called Peruvian Cress. Indeed, the leaves and flowers of the Nasturtium are edible and add a slightly spicy flavour and vibrant colours to salads. When picked while still green, the large seeds, the size of a chickpea, can be pickled in vinegar.

Planting and care

Two possible periods:

Sow in pots under cover in April, in a hole containing 3 to 5 seeds. Place your pots in a bright room at a minimum of 18°C (64.4°F). It takes about 18 days for the seedlings to appear. Transplant your seedlings into the garden in May, after the last frost. Space your plants at least 50 cm (20in) apart.

Sow your Nasturtiums directly in the garden from May to June (when the frost has passed), in a hole containing 3 to 5 seeds. Water generously during cultivation. Removing faded flowers will promote renewed flowering. Nasturtiums are a real delight for aphids and caterpillars (especially those of the Cabbage White butterfly) - which can have the advantage of preventing a caterpillar invasion of your cabbages.
