Description

The Angelonia angustifolia Archangel Dark Purple is a new, particularly ornamental selection of this wonderful annual plant. It stands out with its large flowers for the species and intense purple color, as well as its high resistance to heat and intense sunlight. It offers endless flowering from June to October, with long, upright clusters of densely packed flowers that create a very decorative clump. Angelonia is perfect in pots, containers, and hanging baskets, as well as in sunny borders with well-drained soil. It tolerates relative drought and requires little maintenance.

The Angelonia angustifolia Archangel Dark Purple is a plant from the scrophulariaceae family, just like snapdragons. Its wild ancestor is native to Mexico, Central America, and tropical South America. The apparent delicacy of this plant hides great robustness, as it can tolerate relative drought in open ground. This tender plant, perennial in its native lands, has given rise to numerous cultivars that all share good heat tolerance and seem unattractive to insects and diseases. 'Archangel Dark Purple' grows into a clump of 35-40 cm (14-16in) in all directions when in bloom. The plant continuously produces upright flowering stems from June to October, adorned with numerous two-lipped flowers in a slightly purplish bright violet colour. They resemble both small orchids and snapdragons. The flowers open above the foliage, which consists of small, long, and narrow aromatic leaves with a shiny green color, arranged alternately on the stems. In mild climate regions, Angelonia can self-seed in light soil.

The Angelonia Archangel Dark Purple is an essential terrace plant that is easy to combine and ideal for quickly creating a summer atmosphere. This plant is resistant to heat and rain. It is a good choice for flower beds, containers, and rock gardens. It is fantastic in large floral arrangements, combined with dark-leaved petunias or morning glories, trailing geraniums, diascas, trailing verbenas, and many other species suitable for full sun. It also produces long-lasting cut flowers.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Plant your Angelonia Archangel in a sunny location or possibly partial shade. They require a light, well-draining and humus-rich soil and appreciate a fertilizer application. They tolerate a rather dry soil if planted in the ground (although flowering will be halted in case of excessively dry soil). You can plant your Angelonia in a pot or in the ground. In pots, they should be watered regularly. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage the emergence of new flowers.

Attention, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.
