I am very disappointed with this geranium which was supposed to be 'very trailing' and is not at all, in addition to not being very abundant in flowers, despite being planted in a special geranium soil and being watered every 15 days with a special geranium fertilizer as recommended on the bottle. In short, a bad experience with this variety.

Description

Pelargonium Tommy impresses with its great vigour and unique flowering. From May to October, it produces rounded bouquets made up of small semi-double flowers in a rare and deep colour between burgundy and claret with velvety violet reflections. They are borne on a beautiful, opulent plant, with a trailing habit and lush foliage. Easy to grow and requiring little maintenance, it is perfect for creating sumptuous displays in hanging baskets or pots, alone or paired with a white or pale-pink variety.

Ivy geraniums are derived, among others, from Pelargonium peltatum, a plant in the Geraniaceae family that is native to the coastal region of the Cape Province in South Africa. This species forms creeping or spreading stems, with foliage resembling that of ivy. The hybrids we know as ivy geraniums show the same trailing habit and increased floribundity. Tommy shows rapid growth and particularly generous vegetation, forming a tuft that is both round and trailing, 60 to 80cm (24 to 32in) tall. It is composed of numerous flexible stems adorned with bright green, shiny foliage with five pointed lobes. The slightly fleshy and aromatic leaves are peltate and circular. The semi-double flowers are grouped in terminal clusters, 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) in diameter.

Ivy-leaf geraniums are generous and undemanding plants, ideal for decorating flower pots or flower beds in front of the house. They will bloom for most of the year. They cascade beautifully from planters and balconies. Their flowers create colourful masses that blend together or enhance other plants, whether trailing like the purple or chocolate-foliaged ipomoeas (Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace, Ipomoea Sweet Heart 'Purple') or upright like hortorum geraniums, petunias, gauras, or fuchsias. Tommy provides the necessary volume in floral compositions, whether used alone or combined with a white or pale-pink variety like 'France Roche', for example.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors, once the risk of frost has definitely passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your geraniums in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth.

Geraniums will flower from June to October. They need light, humus-rich, well-drained soil. They do not like stagnant humidity. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer temperatures, especially when grown in pots. Geraniums are susceptible to frost (minimum -2°C (28.4°F)).

These floriferous and fast-growing plants are hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid geranium fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season.

Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep the plants looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
