Photinia: is it equipped to cope with a lack of water?

Photinia enjoys bright to partially shaded exposures, while being able to tolerate moderate full sun, provided the soil remains cool. It thrives in ordinary, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, but also tolerates calcareous lands as long as they are not too compacted. Unfussy, it adapts to various situations, whether in a hedge, particularly to create a beautiful and robust evergreen hedge of Photinia, as a specimen, or in a pot on a terrace.

In dry climate, once well-rooted, Photinia manages to grow well in a dry garden, developing a certain tolerance to difficult conditions. However, young plantings and specimens grown in areas with harsh winters or particularly dry summers require special attention.

Photinia: what drought resistance in our gardens?

Photinia, particularly Photinia x fraseri and its cultivars such as Photinia ‘Red Robin’ or Photinia ‘Carré Rouge’, offers a commendable hardiness of up to -12 to -18°C depending on the varieties. Its resistance to drought, however, depends on several factors: the age of the plant, the quality of the soil, exposure, and the frequency of watering in the early years. During periods of drought, its points of vulnerability are as follows:

• Young plants, particularly sensitive to lack of water, struggle to root deeply if the soil is dry.
• Poor, sandy, or very well-drained soils exacerbate water stress.
• Full sun exposure, combined with a lack of watering, can cause young leaves to dry out, slow growth, or even leaf scorch.
• In cases of prolonged drought, even mature specimens may show signs of fatigue: dull foliage, partial leaf loss, or slowed branching.

How to help Photinia withstand drought in summer?

To support Photinia during episodes of summer drought and enhance its resilience, several simple actions are necessary:

Prepare the ground:

• Amend the soil at the planting of the Photinia with compost or leaf mould to improve water retention capacity.
• Prefer planting in spring or autumn to encourage rooting before the heat intensifies.

Mulch systematically:

• At the base of the Photinia, a mulch is essential using organic materials (pine bark, branch chippings, wood chips) around the plant to a depth of 5 to 10 cm.

Remember to mulch the base of the Photinia to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.

Monitor watering:

• During the first two years, water regularly, especially in cases of high heat or prolonged drought, ensuring to adapt the watering of the Photinia in summer.
• For well-established plants, deep and spaced watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering.
• Avoid watering in full sun: prefer morning or evening.

Limit severe pruning in summer:

• Prune preferably after flowering, in spring or late summer, to avoid weakening the plant during periods of water stress.

Encourage plant diversity:

• Combine Photinia with drought-resistant shrubs to create more resilient mixed hedges: Elaeagnus ebbingei, laurustinus, Rhamnus alaternus, palm laurel or Portugal laurel, Choisya…
