Description

The Polyscias filicifolia, charmingly nicknamed the Fern-leaf Aralia, is an indoor plant that is both elegant and unique. Its finely divided aniseed-green foliage, reminiscent of tropical fronds will bring a touch of exoticism and poetry to your décor. This bush-like plant works wonders in a living room or office, particularly in contemporary or zen-style settings. Relatively tolerant, it will delight all greenery enthusiasts.

The Polyscias filicifolia, which belongs to the Araliaceae family, is a cousin of the Aralia and ivies, also known as the Fern-leaf False Aralia. It is a botanical species native to New Caledonia and New Guinea in Oceania. This bush grows naturally in humid tropical forests, often in the shade of large trees, where it thrives in a warm and humid environment. This natural context explains its adaptation to shaded spaces and its ability to flourish under indirect light, typical of tropical undergrowth. As an indoor plant, this evergreen bush can reach a height of 1 to 2 metres. Its habit is upright and rather narrow, with a trunk and ramified stems. Its bright light green foliage is dense yet delicately divided. The Polyscias filicifolia grows relatively slowly, making it an excellent choice for spaces where vegetation needs to be controlled. Its flowering is very subtle and occurs in early summer, but is rare indoors. Its ideal temperature ranges between 17 and 24°C. Unlike other species in the same genus, the Polyscias filicifolia is non-toxic.

The Fern-leaf Aralia will shine in a bright living room or conservatory. You can pair it with a Philodendron or a Ficus elastica 'Tineke', with its variegated foliage.

Location

Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the leaves of Polyscia filicifolia, as well as cold draughts. A lack of light may cause its leaves to drop in autumn, just like overly dry air. Maintain high ambient humidity. Its elegant silhouette and distinctive character enhance contemporary, classic or exotic interiors. A simple ceramic pot or a stylish planter will beautifully complement its harmonious lines.

Maintenance and care

Water when the compost is dry on the surface, avoiding stagnant water (empty the saucer). The substrate should remain slightly moist at all times. To compensate for dry air in winter (heating) or summer, mist the foliage regularly.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repotting is generally done in spring, when the roots start to grow out of the pot, approximately every 2 to 3 years. The Polyscias prefers to be slightly root-bound in its pot.
Use a good quality houseplant compost. Place a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure proper drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants, rich in nitrogen (NPK 3-1-2), every two weeks during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

The Polyscias may lose its leaves when stressed (change of location, draughts, lack of light). It is important to remove dead leaves regularly to prevent diseases and maintain an attractive appearance.
The Polyscias filicifolia is relatively easy to cultivate. Pruning should be carried out in spring to maintain the desired shape and encourage a dense growth. It is recommended to pinch back overly long stems and remove any dead or diseased branches.

Disease and pest advice

In case of mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water or diluted isopropyl alcohol. Maintaining good ambient humidity helps prevent red spider mite attacks.
