Description

The Polyscias balfouriana 'Butterfly' also known as Balfour's Aralia is a popular houseplant prized for its unique foliage and elegant habit. Its leaves are rounded, glossy, lobed, and slightly undulate. Stunning in a living room or office, this plant fits into contemporary, exotic, or traditional décors. Due to its requirements, However, it is best suited to experienced indoor plant enthusiasts.

The Polyscias balfouriana 'Butterfly' belongs to the Araliaceae family, a cousin of garden-grown Aralia and ivies. The species originates from Papua New Guinea and Queensland, Australia: it is a tropical to subtropical climate plant. Botanical synonyms for the species include Aralia balfouriana and Panax balfourii. The specific name balfouriana honours the Scottish botanist John Hutton Balfour. Balfour's Aralia 'Butterfly' is a perennial bush with an upright, bushy habit. Grown in pots, it is valued for its relatively slow growth, which helps maintain its size for a long time; it also responds well to pruning, allowing it to thicken if needed and vary its shape. This plant develops a trunk and a crown of leaves. At maturity, indoors, it rarely exceeds 1.20m in height, with a spread of about 50–60cm. The orbicular to reniform, lobed and slightly undulate leaves measure between 4 and 7cm in diameter. They are characterised by a leathery texture and a slightly puckered surface. Their colour is a vibrant, glossy green. Flowering is rare in indoor cultivation and very subtle.

Warning - the Polyscias balfouriana 'Butterfly' is considered potentially toxic if ingested by humans or pets.

In indoor cultivation, the Polyscias balfouriana 'Butterfly' requires bright but indirect light, high ambient humidity, and temperatures between 18 and 24°C. It is sensitive to dry air which can cause the leaves to drop, as can insufficient light.

The Polyscias genus includes around 80 species of bushes and small trees primarily native to tropical regions of Asia, New Caledonia, Madagascar, and various Pacific islands. These plants typically thrive in humid undergrowth where they benefit from dappled light and a moisture-rich atmosphere.

The Polyscias balfouriana 'Butterfly' brings natural elegance to a bright living room or conservatory where it recreates a tropical and soothing atmosphere. You can pair it with a Philodendron or a Ficus elastica 'Tineke' with its variegated foliage.

Maintenance and care

Water when the compost is dry on the surface, avoiding stagnant water (empty the saucer). Use non-calcareous water to prevent yellowing of the leaves. Polyscias balfouriana is more demanding than other species of the same genus, particularly due to its sensitivity to lime.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repotting is generally done in spring, when the roots start to grow out of the pot, approximately every 2 to 3 years. The Polyscias prefers to be slightly root-bound in its pot.
Use a mixture of houseplant compost, turf and sand to ensure good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants, rich in nitrogen (NPK 3-1-2), every two weeks during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

The Polyscias may lose its leaves when stressed (change of location, draughts, lack of light). It is important to remove dead leaves regularly to prevent diseases and maintain an attractive appearance.
Pruning is carried out in spring to maintain the desired shape and encourage dense growth. It is recommended to pinch back overly long stems and remove any dead or diseased branches.

Disease and pest advice

In case of mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water or diluted isopropyl alcohol. Maintaining good ambient humidity helps prevent red spider mite attacks.
