Description

The Calathea orbifolia is a houseplant adorned with beautiful broad, glossy, distinctly striped soft green and silver, remarkably graphic leaves. Radically exotic, it fits into modern, bohemian, or 'jungle' interiors. Placed in a bright space but shielded from direct sunlight, this plant becomes a true decorative gem. Ensure to maintain highly humid ambient air around it as this tropical beauty loves to feel at home in a warm and moist atmosphere.

The Calathea orbifolia belongs to the Marantaceae family. A perennial and herbaceous species, it exhibits slow but steady growth; a mature plant will reach about 60 cm in height and spread. Its habit is upright, forming a dense clump. Its broad, round leaves, measuring up to 30 cm in diameter, are arranged in a rosette. Their texture is soft and silky, featuring a distinctive pattern of silver and soft green stripes reminiscent of hand-painted lines. The Calathea orbifolia rarely flowers indoors; its small, discreet flowers are white and of little ornamental interest.

Native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly Bolivia, the Calathea orbifolia is a species that thrives under the dense canopy of humid jungles. It flourishes in rich, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil, while appreciating filtered light and high ambient humidity. These natural conditions dictate its indoor needs: a bright location but without direct sunlight, a constant temperature between 18 and 24 °C, and regular watering with non-calcareous water. Non-toxic to animals, the Calathea orbifolia is also renowned for its mild air-purifying properties.

Overall, the Calathea genus, recently largely reclassified under the Goeppertia genus, is known for its spectacular leaves and 'live' behaviour: its leaves slightly fold at night, a movement nicknamed 'prayer'. This plant is sensitive to draughts and lack of  moisture, but with proper care, it can add a lush touch to your decor.

Location

The calathea can find its place in any moderately lit room of the house, away from direct sunlight. However, avoid placing it in a draught or a room that is too dry, as this could damage its leaves. A tropical conservatory with a warm and humid atmosphere would also meet all its needs.

Maintenance and care

Water twice a week, preferably with non-calcareous water at room temperature. Mist regularly 2 to 3 times a week. In winter, reduce watering but maintain misting.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2-3 years, in spring.
Use a mix of houseplant compost and coconut fibres, with clay pebbles at the bottom to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants, to be applied every two weeks during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Check the leaves regularly to prevent them from becoming sticky or stained, which could indicate a humidity issue or parasitic problems. Clean the foliage with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No pruning is necessary, but remove the dry leaves to maintain a clean and attractive appearance.

Disease and pest advice

If you notice scale insects, remove them using cotton wool soaked in alcohol, then spray with a solution containing soft soap.
