The lily or Lilium martagon is bulbous plant is emblematic of alpine flora and is a protected species. Highly sought after by collectors, its flowers are pendulous, rose-violet in colour, with recurved petals that give it its typical "Turkish turban" shape, hence its nickname. Its whorled foliage is also quite decorative. There is also a very beautiful form with white flowers (Lilium martagon var. album). Hybridised with other species, it has produced splendid varieties with colours ranging from yellow to red to orange, such as 'Claude Shride' or 'Orange Marmalade'. Undemanding and hardy, it grows in humus-rich and well-drained soil in partial shade. Once established, it will faithfully bloom again.
