Description

The Petunia Surfinia Trailing 'Light Yellow' is a captivating variety with very pale yellow flowers, but with a bright yellow heart that diffuses along veins running through the petals. It blooms very early and for a long time, and its large 7 cm (3in) flowers completely cover the contrasting dark green foliage. With a trailing habit, its invariably flowering cascading silhouette and its beautiful heat resistance make this annual the queen of hanging baskets. An easy-to-grow flower that requires little maintenance.

The Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or frost-tender perennial plants are most often grown as annuals and all originate from the warm regions of South America. The Surfinia® Petunia is a relatively recent sterile hybrid of petunia, with a trailing weeping habit rather than an upright one, making it a magnificent plant in hanging baskets. It was created in Japan and is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

The Petunia Surfinia Trailing 'Light Yellow' forms a vigorous dense and trailing clump, with creeping and fuzzy stems hanging down for 60 to 90 cm (24 to 35in). The plant flowers from May to October, provided it is regularly supplied with water and fertilizer. Its cup-shaped flowers are of a good size, about 7 cm (3in) in diameter, a very pale yellow colour, with bright yellow veins and a darker yellow throat. They nestle against each other on dense foliage. The leaves, quite pubescent, are ovate and pointed, with entire edges and a dark green colour. The foliage is vigorous and healthy. This variety has an exceptional habit and requires very little maintenance as its sterile flowers easily fall off by themselves.

Plant the Petunia Surfinia Trailing 'Light Yellow' in large pots or hanging baskets, alone or accompanied by other varieties, in harmony, such as Cascadias 'Indian Summer' or Sophistica 'Lime Green', or in contrast with blue or lavender-coloured varieties. In flower beds, plant several plants to form a ground cover at the base of pastel-coloured flowers such as annual poppies. No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias rival geraniums in splendor and length of flowering.

Green plants from 4 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) in cases of 5 small plug plants, 2.8 cm (1in) in diameter and 4 cm (2in) high, individually labeled. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted outdoors.

Note: Please note that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered conditions (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-bearing soil, but above all, well-draining. Do not water them too much at the beginning of their growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and with rapid growth, they are greedy. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertilizer for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
