Description

This Primroses Collection brings together 5 different varieties of primroses or Primula eliator, selected from among the best.  Highly floriferous, offering a beautiful range of colours, their flowering period extends from January to April, depending on the weather and the variety. Plants sheltered from the cold bloom earlier. These plants are irreplaceable for brightening up window sills, containers and lightly shaded borders. They form small round clumps of large, wavy leaves topped with fresh clusters of flowers.

The collection consists of:

1 plug plant of Primula eliator Veristar Late Blue F1: 3 cm, violet flowers with blue highlights and a yellow centre surrounded by magenta, in umbels, from February to March.

1 plug plant of Primula eliator 'Colibri Aztec Gold': 4 cm, golden yellow flower with an orange-spotted centre. Its umbels renew from January to April.

1 plug plant of Primula eliator 'Colibri White': 4 cm white corollas with an orange centre. Flowering from January to April.

1 plug plant of Primula eliator F1 'Veristar Late Marmalade': slightly scented flowering, dark orange and bright orange, from March to April.

1 plug plant of Primula eliator 'Colibri Red Shades': bright red with a golden yellow centre, the flowers of this variety renew from January to April.

Hybrid primroses (F1) are small short-lived perennials often grown as biennials. They like partial shade and rich soil, remaining slightly moist. Plant them in containers and pots or directly in the ground, respecting a spacing of 20 cm. Plant them upon receipt, in September-October or in March-April. If the intended location is not yet ready or the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them on in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In containers and pots, use good potting soil for flowering plants (such as geranium potting soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful of excess water! Use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it does not rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Primroses are very floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, and throughout the flowering period, provide a complete liquid fertiliser for flowering plants 1 to 2 times a week when watering. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once flowering is over, container-grown plants can be replanted in partially shaded areas in the garden.

In the garden, primroses can be planted at the front of partially shaded beds, especially at the edge of a grove or along pathways. They go well with spring bulbs such as crocuses, snowdrops, and daffodils. Plant your bulbs in small groups between clumps of primroses. Primroses also go well with pansies and violets.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot them as soon as possible, in pots, containers, or directly in the ground.

Planting and care

Upon receipt, ideally in September, plant your plug plants of primroses in a pot, a planter, a large container or a border, in partial shade. They need light, humus-bearing soil and appreciate a fertiliser application. In pots, biennials should be watered at planting, and you can store them during winter on a balcony or a window sill protected from cold winds.
