Description

The Hypoestes phyllostachya 'White' is a selection from the Polka Dot Plant that will bring a lovely touch of elegance and light to your interior. Its generously white-maculate, on a dark green background foliage will decorate a corner of your living room or a shelf in your office. Its style suits both modern and more traditional décors. Choose a bright spot for it, but away from direct sunlight and in not-too-dry ambien air. With some basic care, its cultivation is accessible to beginners.

The Hypoestes phyllostachya 'White' belongs to the Acanthaceae family. It is a compact perennial that quickly forms a lovely clump of 20 to 30 cm in height with a similar spread. Its slender, ramified stems are adorned with ovate, slightly pointed leaves with a soft texture, abundantly maculate and speckled with white on a dark green background. Its discreet summer flowering takes the form of small tubular lavender-coloured flowers, often removed to preserve the plant's energy and encourage foliage development.

Native to the tropical forests of Madagascar, the botanical Hypoestes phyllostachya species thrives in warm, humid, and shaded environments. This plant does not tolerate temperatures below 15°C, limiting its outdoor cultivation to temperate climates or as an annual.

Indoors, the Polka Dot Plant enjoys bright but indirect light and temperatures between 15 and 24°C. It requires a well-draining, slightly moist soil and a moderately humid atmosphere. Its care is simple: bright light from an east-facing window and regular watering without excess water are the keys to maintaining its beautiful foliage.

The Hypoestes 'White' fits perfectly in a bright living room, a well-lit bedroom, or even a minimalist furnished office. Placed in a black or red ceramic planter, it becomes a true decorative piece. You can also display it on a wall-mounted shelf alongside other plants with contrasting foliage. In a conservatory or relaxation corner, pair it with natural textiles and light-coloured wood furniture for a soothing and elegant effect.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface, approximately once a week, reducing the frequency in winter. Mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week to maintain adequate ambient humidity, especially if the atmosphere is dry, particularly in winter.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repotting should be done in spring, when the roots start to become cramped in their pot. It is recommended to repot the young plant every 1 to 2 years.
Use a light, well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter. Adding perlite or horticultural sand can improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 3-1-2) every two weeks during the active growth period (spring and summer). Reduce applications in autumn and stop in winter.

Houseplant care

Remove yellowed or damaged leaves. Remove flowers to encourage leaf growth.
To maintain a compact habit and encourage branching, it is advisable to pinch out the tips of the stems regularly. Removing the flowers, which are often insignificant, also helps to focus the plant's energy on foliage development.

Disease and pest advice

Although generally resistant, Hypoestes can be affected by fungal diseases. To prevent powdery mildew, ensure good air circulation around the plant and avoid wetting the foliage when watering.
