Description

Vriesea 'Vogue' is a remarkable indoor bromeliad that combines elegance and visual impact. With its bi-coloured "plume" flowering in deep purple and dark violet emerging from a generous rosette, this variety adds charm to a modern, jungle chic, or contemporary interior. It will be perfect in a bright living room or any other sufficiently lit and not too dry space.

Vriesea 'Vogue' is a perennial plant from the Bromeliaceae family, ideal for pot cultivation. At maturity, this cultivar, developed in Florida before 2003, reaches a height of 45 cm, depending on growing conditions. It forms a dense and opulent rosette of dark green leaves, broad, 20 to 25 cm long, slightly arched, and glossy. The spring or summer flowering of this variety takes the form of a bi-coloured feathery inflorescence, measuring approximately 15 to 20 cm long. The floral bracts display a striking combination of deep purple and dark violet, enhanced by light green hues on the secondary parts. This flowering can last several weeks. As with all bromeliads, the main rosette naturally dies after flowering, but it produces offsets that allow the plant to perpetuate itself. The Vriesea genus includes over 250 species native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, particularly Brazil. These epiphytic plants grow on trees, taking advantage of the canopy to capture filtered light and ambient moisture. The genus name Vriesea pays tribute to the Dutch botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese (1806-1862), recognised for his contributions to botany and the study of tropical plants.
Vriesea 'Vogue' is a robust plant that requires little effort to thrive. It appreciates abundant light but without direct sun exposure, which could scorch its foliage. Moderate to high ambient humidity is ideal; you can mist the plant or use a humidifier, especially in winter. The temperature should be maintained between 18 and 24 °C to ensure its health.

Vriesea 'Vogue' fits into various decoration styles. To create a harmonious exotic composition, pair it, for example, with a Vriesea 'Splendide', with its beautifully striped leaves, and a Guzmania 'Rosa', whose bright pink bracts will add an extra touch of colour. Placed together on a console, shelf, or coffee table, these bromeliads create a tropical scene full of character.

Location

The Vriesea Vogue is suitable for any room with good light, without direct sunlight and moderate humidity. Avoid draughts and direct heat sources such as radiators. Do not allow water to stagnate in the rosette when the temperature drops below 18°C. Its modest dimensions make it ideal for small spaces. Placed on a shelf, console or coffee table, this variety catches everyone's eye with its long-lasting colourful flowering. Don't hesitate to incorporate it into a modern, bohemian or jungle chic interior.

Maintenance and care

Water by pouring fresh water into the central rosette and keep the substrate slightly moist. Empty and renew the water in the rosette regularly to avoid stagnation. Use soft water to preserve the leaf and root system.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repotting the Vriesea 'Splendide' is generally done after flowering, when separating the offsets. Since this plant has few roots, a small-diameter pot (around 10 to 12 cm) is sufficient.
Use a light, well-draining compost, ideally a mix for bromeliads or orchids. Add clay pebbles to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants with an NPK formula of 20-20-20. Dilute it to half the recommended dose and apply it once a month during the growth period, in spring and summer. Stop applications in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

The plant occasionally loses its lower leaves, but this remains minimal. Ensure to keep the rosette clean by avoiding the accumulation of debris or dust, especially at the heart of the plant.
No specific pruning is required for Vriesea. After flowering, the main rosette dies. Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's aesthetic appeal.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in 70% alcohol. Excess water leads to root rot.
