Description

The Buddleia x davidii 'Magda's Gold Knight' is a bush that stands out for its variegated foliage, with a marked yellow colour and an irregular green central stripe. This foliage contrasts with its long inflorescences of intense blue-violet, which bloom from July to September. A very floriferous, elegant, and colourful shrub, its fragrant flowering attracts many butterflies. It is easy to cultivate in ordinary soil, even poor and occasionally dry.

The Buddleia davidii 'Magda's Gold Knight' is a deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. It is derived, among others, from the David's Buddleia, also known as the Father David's Buddleia or the Changing Buddleia, a robust Chinese species that has become invasive in our climates. 'Magda's Gold Knight' has an open and gracefully spreading habit, supported by arching branches. It will reach an average height of 1.50m to 1.80m and a width of 1.50m to 1.60m in 7 or 8 years, depending on the growing conditions. It blooms from July to September, producing an abundance of dense flower panicles measuring up to 25cm long. These flowers are blue-violet and release a highly attractive fragrance for pollinating insects. The ornamental foliage of this Butterfly Bush consists of long yellow leaves with a green central stripe, with a more greyish down on the underside. The leaves, 15 to 25cm long, are pointed and lanceolate. This very hardy shrub is resistant to urban pollution and does not suffer from occasional drought in deep soil.

Whether planted individually or in groups, in a small hedge, or in a perennial bed, the Buddleia x davidii 'Magda's Gold Knight' will enhance the garden uniquely. Its inflorescences, animated by a constant flutter of butterflies, are a spectacle in themselves. Combined with its remarkably bright foliage, they are irresistible. This beautiful shrub highlights the blue flowers of the Gloire de Versailles Ceanothus, for example, or the mauve and white panicles of certain summer lilacs. You can also plant it in a free hedge, with botanical roses, serviceberries, hawthorns, ornamental apple trees, or other prunus. It adapts well to coastal areas and growing in containers on the terrace. Its fragrant flowers are also beautiful in bouquets. You can also combine this Buddleia with tall grasses (Miscanthus, Panicum, Deschampsia) for an elegant contrast.

Planting and care

The Buddleia davidii Magda's Gold Knight is easy to grow, as it is a low-maintenance plant that adapts to a wide range of soils and climates. It thrives in sunny locations, but also flowers in partial shade. Plant it in spring or early autumn, in ordinary soil, even limestone and poor soil, but well-prepared and well-drained. Once established, the plant can tolerate moderate periods of drought, especially if planted in deep soil. The buddleia has no significant enemies. However, be cautious of caterpillars, weevils, bugs, and red spiders that can invade it. Pruning vigorously after flowering and/or in early spring maintains the bush's ramified and compact habit and encourages it to produce numerous flowers.

Care

Pruning instructions The bush only requires a simple pruning after flowering or in spring. However, every 2 to 3 years, it is good to cut back the branches to maintain a compact habit and prevent the bush from becoming too open. In late winter, around March or April, remove half or even two-thirds of the branches and cut off all the dead wood. Buddleias flower on new growth, so you won't risk removing the upcoming flowers.
