Description

The ‘Cerise Pearls’ Oriental Persicaria is a recent variety selected for its compact habit, well-suited for pots and hanging baskets. This majestic annual plant is covered all summer long with flowers resembling pinkish-red tassels. They are nectar-rich and make excellent flowers for your dried bouquets. The seeds are loved by birds and easily self-sow. It is an easy-going, hardy plant that will thrive in a sunny or semi-shaded flower bed.

From the Polygonaceae family, the Oriental Persicaria is also known as Polygonum orientale. This herbaceous annual is native to Asia and appreciated for its spectacular summer flowering and its lush foliage. It easily reaches a height of 1.5m. 'Cerise Pearls' generally does not exceed 1m high. Its green leaves are heart-shaped. It is a very floriferous plant. From July to October, it is covered with pinkish-red flowers grouped in trailing spikes at the end of the stems which attract pollinating insects. Then the seeds are loved by birds. The flowers will make lovely bouquets even when dried.

In the garden, the 'Cerise Pearls' Oriental Knotweed is magnificent in a flower bed and surprising in a large hanging basket. Pair it with grasses like Miscanthus floridulus or Panicum virgatum Heavy Metal.
Its abundant and nectar-rich flowering makes it an excellent plant to attract bees and butterflies and increase biodiversity in the garden. Don't forget, its seeds are also loved by birds.

Planting and care

You have two options for sowing your Persicaria orientalis Cerise Pearls.

You can sow the seeds in pots filled with compost a few weeks before the last frost (end of winter). Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. It takes between 21 and 60 days for germination. If the seeds do not germinate, place them in cold storage (4°C) for 4 weeks and then return them to warmth. Then acclimatise your young plants to the outdoor temperature for about fifteen days before planting them in the ground.

Alternatively, you can sow the seeds directly in the ground in spring, after the last frost. Cover them with a thin layer of compost or well-rotted compost. Thin out if necessary.
Water regularly until the plants are well established.

Persicaria orientalis 'Cerise Pearls' is an easy-care plant. Water it regularly (it appreciates soils that do not dry out) and remove faded flowers.
