Planting and care

Plant Panicum virgatum 'Heavy Metal' in deep soil, preferably moist and moderately fertile. Fertiliser inputs are unnecessary. Take the trouble to loosen the soil well to promote establishment. Water during dry weather in the first summer. Prefer spring planting in cold regions for better establishment. Wait until the end of winter, February or March, to cut back the dry stems to about 20 cm (8in) from the ground. It is better to leave them during winter, as they provide a decorative presence and offer a refuge to a whole range of useful garden fauna.
