Description

Myrrhis odorata is a perennial aromatic with large fern-like, highly decorative leaves. All parts of the plant emit a strong aniseed scent, which is why it is also known as Aniseed Chervil.

Myrrhis odorata has deciduous, highly divided, triangular, bright green leaves 30cm (12in) long and toothed. In June, it produces inflorescences that grow up to 50cm (20in) tall, with umbels of white star-shaped flowers, followed by 2cm (1in) long, shiny brown, wrinkled seeds with a refreshing aniseed flavour.

Sweet cicely thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in semi-shaded positions. Add compost when planting.

Harvest the leaves of sweet cicely as needed. They can be frozen. Consume them fresh and raw to flavour salads, vegetables, omelettes, and soups. The seeds are used to flavour desserts and liqueurs.

Its juice mixed with warm milk and honey, acts as an antispasmodic and treats coughs and bronchitis.

Planting and care

Myrrhis odorata needs fertile, moist and well-drained soil in a semi-shaded location. It does not tolerate waterlogged soils in winter, so mix sand or gravel with the original soil when planting and add compost. Water regularly and mulch in summer to maintain moisture.
