Planting and care

Asparagus pseudoscaber 'Spitzenschleier' should be planted in spring or autumn, in well-drained, cool and humus-rich soil. Plant it in the ground in a sunny or lightly shaded spot, avoiding areas that are too wet in winter. Loosened soil enriched with organic matter will encourage good root development. Water regularly during the first year, then only during prolonged dry spells, as this perennial becomes quite self-sufficient once established.

In pots, choose a deep container with good drainage, and use a mix of light compost supplemented with sand or perlite. Place your pot in partial shade during summer, then move it to a bright and cool room if winters are harsh (below -15°C).

This asparagus can be grown as a decorative indoor plant if provided with plenty of indirect light, a cool and well-ventilated atmosphere, and a substrate that remains slightly moist but never waterlogged. To respect its natural cycle, it should be overwintered in a cool room, around 5 to 12°C. It does not need intense light during this period, but the room should remain airy and frost-free. If kept in a room that is too warm (above 15°C), it may become exhausted or produce weaker foliage. Don’t worry if its foliage turns yellow in autumn—this is normal for a deciduous plant. Simply reduce watering during its dormant period until growth resumes in spring.
