Description

The Phormium hybrid 'Bronze Baby' is a dwarf variety of New Zealand Flax that forms a dense and upright clump with a slightly spreading habit of reddish-bronze foliage that turns purple depending on the season. This compact variety is a less hardy perennial, up to -7°C, that prefers mild climates and cool, deep soils. It also thrives in a large container and can be overwintered in a cool climate.

Like all Phormiums, the 'Bronze Baby' New Zealand Flax belongs to the agavaceae family. It is mainly derived from Phormium tenax, the larger of the two New Zealand species. This superb rhizomatous perennial develops slowly into a large, non-running clump. With an upright habit, it reaches an average height of 80 cm to 1 m depending on growing conditions, with a spread of 80 cm or more in fertile and cool soil. The evergreen leaves are stiff and pointed at their tips. Tall flower stalks of at least 1.30 m appear from May to July, depending on the climate, overhanging the foliage clump. They are tinted purple-red in the form of curved spike-like flowers, which turn more or less bright red when ripe. This flowering attracts certain birds and many pollinating insects.

The Phormium is a highly decorative plant, ideal for large spaces in borders or rockeries in regions with mild climates. Whether you plant it alone or in groups, it contributes to structuring the space while bringing an exotic charm to the garden. To enhance this plant, associate it with silver ground covers such as Artemisia, dwarf Nepeta mussini, or carpets of blue fescues. Like tall grasses, the Phormium blends perfectly into a modern garden with clean lines. In colder regions, it can be grown in a large pot on a terrace or balcony and then protected from frost in winter in a cold greenhouse or a minimally heated conservatory. It softens concrete structures in urban environments and creates an exotic and contrasting atmosphere when combined with rounder plants such as Pittosporum or Helichrysums.

The Maoris use Phormiums, like we use flax, for their fibres, which are used in the textile industry. This is probably where the vernacular name "New Zealand Flax" comes from.

Planting and care

The 'Bronze Baby' Phormium is a hardy plant grown in open ground, mainly in regions where frost does not drop below -7°. Pot cultivation is more suitable everywhere, allowing wintering to be sheltered from frost in a cool and bright room.

Plant your Phormium in a container or a large pot with the bottom filled with gravel, pottery shards, or clay balls. The mixture that welcomes it should be fertile and well-draining (1/3 leaf compost, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 ordinary garden soil, enriched with a handful of crushed horn).

Place the plant in full sun. During the growth period, water the plant generously so the soil stays moist. Once a month, use diluted "special green plant" fertiliser when watering. In winter, reduce watering and fertilising and let the soil dry slightly between waterings.

In regions with mild climates and light frost, plant the phormium in open ground, in a well-drained but cool and fertile soil.

In summer, ensure the plant has enough water. In winter, it can rely on rainwater.

In case of severe frost, install a thick mulch at the base of the plant and cover it with a winter veil.

In the coldest regions, a thick mulch will help protect the roots from freezing in winter.
