Description

The 'Ho Oden' Japanese Azalea, formerly known as Azalea japonica, is an evergreen bush that forms a spreading ground cover bush that stands out from other varieties by the colour of its flowers, tinted with soft pink and spotted with intense violet on the upper petals.

Originally from Japan, the 'Ho Oden' Azalea forms a compact bush with a rounded habit that reaches 70 cm (27.6 in) in width at maturity. Its elongated and glossy evergreen leaves are dark green all year round. During the months of April and May, the bush produces numerous 5 cm (2 in) trumpet-shaped flowers, coloured with pale pink spotted with intense violet, grouped in generous clusters.

Hardy down to -12°C, the Japanese Azalea 'Ho Oden' requires a bright exposure but without direct sunlight and should ideally be planted in partial shade, in a location protected from cold and dry winds. With a slow growth, this small acid-loving bush prefers fresh, humus-bearing and well-drained soil.

The 'Ho Oden' Azalea dresses up heather beds all year round and brings gardens to life in spring with its numerous colourful flowers. Plant it on a slope, in a shady rockery, or as a border plant alongside Pieris, Heathers, Kalmias, and Japanese Maples.

Split into two horticultural groups, the Rhododendron genus on one hand includes Chinese and Japanese Azaleas with small evergreen or deciduous leaves, and 5 stamens per flower, and on the other hand, Rhododendrons with large, evergreen, glossy leaves and flowers with more than 10 stamens. Although highly debatable from a botanical point of view, this classification is still widely used by horticulture professionals.

Planting and care

Plant the Japanese Azalea Ho Oden in partial shade, protected from cold and drying winds, in fresh, humus-bearing and light soil, with a tendency towards acidity. Like all plants that prefer acidic soil, it cannot tolerate limestone or heavy soil that becomes waterlogged in winter. Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at the base level in a mixture composed of 1/4 turf, leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system, which makes them susceptible to long periods of drought. Therefore, it is recommended to enrich the soil with humus and provide abundant watering during dry periods. Additionally, their root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) during planting. Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark around the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture and acidity. Maintenance involves removing faded flowers in summer and clearing away dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils, which eat the edges of the leaves and rootlets, as well as by the infamous 'rhododendron beetle', which rarely causes significant damage. You can treat them with carbofuran. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and can lead to premature plant death. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or a deeply planted root ball can also contribute to this phenomenon.
