More information

A climbing plant that will need to be trained (on a trellis, lattice, etc.). It produces small fruits (5 to 15 cm), pale green in colour, which should be harvested before ripeness to retain their tenderness. Their white flesh is tender and crisp, with a taste similar to cucumber. At ripeness, they hollow out like peppers. The seeds should then be removed before consumption. Sow in buckets under cover from April to mid-May, then directly in the ground until June. Harvest from August until the first frosts.

Description

The Cyclanthera Caigua is a climbing plant that will need to be trained (on a trellis, lattice, etc.). It produces small fruits (5 to 15 cm), pale green, which should be harvested before ripeness to retain their tenderness. Their white flesh is tender and crunchy, with a taste similar to cucumber. When ripe, they hollow out like peppers. At this stage, the seeds should be removed before consumption. Sow in buckets under shelter from April to mid-May, then directly in the ground until June. Harvest from August until the first frosts. These seeds are from organic farming.

Native to Central America, specifically Mexico, the Cyclanthera is a highly decorative climbing plant with fragrant flowering. The fruits are harvested before ripeness, while the skin is still green. They are elongated, tapered, and slightly pointed at the ends. The seeds are black. When ripe, the fruits burst, scattering the seeds around, leading to spontaneous sowing.
Cyclanthera can be eaten raw in salads, marinated, juiced, cooked like green beans, or stuffed like peppers. The fruits can also be pickled in vinegar, similar to gherkins and capers.

Harvest: 3 to 4 months after sowing, harvest the fruits before ripeness, while the skin is still green.

Storage: Pickled in vinegar, the fruits keep for a long time. Fresh, store them in the refrigerator for a few days.

The gardener's tip: Cyclanthera is rarely diseased. However, the proximity of certain plants can be beneficial: garlic, dill, carrot, cabbage, chives, shallot, bean, lettuce...

Planting and care

Sowing:

From April to mid-May: under cover, in a seed tray or bucket. Thin out after germination, keeping only the strongest young plants. Transplant at the end of May, spacing them 1m apart in all directions, once all risk of frost has passed.

From mid-May to June: sow directly in the ground, in pockets of two or three seeds, spaced 1m apart in all directions. After germination, keep only the strongest young plants.

A staking system should be provided for each young plant. Expose the cyclanthera to full sun or partial shade. The soil should be rich, deep and well-drained. Like all cucurbits, it thrives in rich soil: remember to add compost before sowing.

Growing:

The cyclanthera requires no special care. During dry spells, watering should be regular. Consider installing mulch to keep the soil cool and suppress weeds. It is recommended not to leave the fruits in place as they would burst and scatter their seeds everywhere, leading to self-seeding and potential future invasion.
