Description

Epiphyllum anguliger, the zigzag cactus, is an original epiphytic cactus, appreciated for its toothed, wavy, and trailing foliage. Unlike classic cacti, it grows naturally in Mexican tropical forests, where it develops by clinging to trees. Its flat and scalloped, bright green stems give it an extraordinary appearance. It can produce large, fragrant white flowers, which open at night. Easy to care for and resilient, it looks stunning in hanging baskets or on elevated supports, in a bright indoor setting.

Epiphyllum anguliger, also known as the Fishbone Cactus, belongs to the Cactaceae family and grows in the humid forests of Mexico, where it lives as an epiphyte on tree trunks and branches. Unlike desert cacti, this species prefers a more humid and shaded environment, with a light substrate. It develops long, flattened stems, reaching up to 60 cm in length, with deeply lobed edges, resembling a zigzag. Its white or cream flowers, sometimes slightly pink, are large and spectacular (up to 10-15 cm in diameter) and emit an intense fragrance when they bloom. After flowering, green to yellowish ovoid fruits may appear, although they remain rare in indoor cultivation.

Epiphyllum anguliger thrives under bright, indirect light, ideally near an east or west-facing window, without direct sunlight. It prefers temperatures between 18 and 24 °C and should be kept above 10 °C in winter. Its growing substrate should be light and well-draining, composed of a cactus mix. Unlike desert cacti, it requires more regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist but not waterlogged. The ambient humidity of our homes suits it well.

Due to its flexible and trailing stemsEpiphyllum anguliger is perfect in hanging baskets or on elevated supports, in a living room, conservatory, or bright bathroom. A hanging ceramic pot or macramé will highlight its trailing habit. It pairs well with other tropical plants such as Tillandsia, climbing Philodendrons, or Rhipsalis, another epiphytic cactus.

Maintenance and care

Water thoroughly, but not too frequently, allowing the substrate to dry out on the top few centimetres between waterings. In summer, if the plant is outdoors and the weather is hot, it will appreciate two generous waterings per week. The late summer flowering is triggered by a 10°C difference between night and day temperatures.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in early spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the young plant becomes too large for its pot.
Use a mix of succulent compost with draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser for plants once a month during the growth period in spring and summer.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Shower the young plant to combat red spider mites.
